Advanced day for Butlers and Housekeepers
Butlers should bring appropriate work wear for the evening when they will put their skills into practice at a small dinner party
This is a one day course intended as a follow up to the two day basic course. The butlers and housekeepers split into separate groups and work with a tutor for most of the day finessing the students’ skills and ensuring they have the confidence to work at a top level in the workplace. They also work in groups at the end of the day to ensure they understand the implications of team work and the issues that might arise in a large household.
Reflection on basic skills and the routines and schedules of a busy private household
The roles of staff, their interactions, their systems and communication methods, team work, the typical day, the busy weekend, the shooting party, difficult situations and problem solving.
Butlers
Spend most of the day with the Senior Butler tutor going over all the skills of service but also focussing on the protocol of the dining room, organisation of a dinner party, valeting to a top level of organisation and care of clothes, organising events, – fine tuning of all skills.
Housekeepers
Spend most of the day with the Senior Housekeeping tutor going over the priorities and methods of a senior housekeeper – products and methods, laundry and care of clothing, systems, turning down beds and all matters to do with the smooth running of the household.
There will be a break for coffee at 11.00am and lunch at 12.30pm. The two groups get back together again for afternoon tea at 3.30pm when they work in teams considering joint issues until 4.30pm.
4.30pm: There is a question and answer session until 5.00pm when the course officially ends and housekeepers depart – at this point Advanced Certificates are given to housekeepers who have exhibited clear ability at the advanced level.
Butlers prepare for the dinner party until 6.00pm when they have a light supper. Guests arrive at 6.45pm to dine at 7.15pm and depart at 9.30pm.. Butlers have a short debrief and certificates are issued to those who have proven their abilities.
Students need to bring a pen and wear comfortable but reasonably smart clothes (not jeans).
Butlers need to bring formal work wear or a dark suit for the evening event.
